The sacrifice you might not know you’re making

Something that comes up often in the reflective practice space is a preparedness to show up for others. And whilst this is admirable and often humbling to witness, it also often occurs at the expense of attending to our own needs and wellbeing. Today, October 10th is World Mental Health Day, with the theme ‘make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.In this edition of The Ascent, we highlight the common tendency in health professionals to ‘self-sacrifice’ [...]

Managing burnout

Lately we’ve been hearing a lot about anxiety, fatigue, and exhaustion, and we’ve been feeling this too. Whilst there could be a whole host of explanations for this, two words come up time and again – burnout and stress. It can be hard to differentiate between the two, and indeed some of us may feel like we’re balancing on a fine line between them. This edition of The Ascent explores these experiences more deeply in a bid to try [...]

Learn how to identify and manage compassion fatigue

We’ve been through a lot over the past two years. Although we are likely relieved at some of the return to ‘normality’ that we’ve experienced this year, many of us are noticing that there’s still a haze of fatigue hanging over us. Perhaps the level of emotional capacity that we used to have just hasn’t returned. We’ve also heard people comment on their experience of a dulled response to troubling news, such as the floods in QLD/NSW, the war [...]

Approaching 2022 with all that’s come before

Well, it’s been an interesting start to the year! The new year is often a time of excitement and (dare we say!) hope for the year ahead. But unfortunately, 2022 started much the same way (worse?!) than we ended 2021. Many of us, even those who were able to take a break, are feeling worn out, tired, overworked, and trying to figure out what comes next.As we head into 2022, we want to dedicate this first issue of the Ascent [...]
