New Graduate Nurses welcomed at Thomas Embling Hospital

Forensicare would like to extend a warm welcome to our 2019 graduate nurses. Twenty new nurses commenced their orientation into mental health nursing earlier today.

Today Forensicare welcomed 20 new graduate nurses into its 12-month Graduate Nurse Program. The registered nurses will work around the units in Thomas Embling Hospital in six-month rotations. They will also be supported by Forensicare to complete their Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing Practice through University of Melbourne—a two-year endeavour.

The nurses will be to be overseen and supported by Forensicare staff, gaining valuable experience working in a forensic mental health setting.

Nurses who pass the 12-month program will be eligible for the 2020 Postgraduate Nurse Program. Second-year postgraduate nurses are rotated across Thomas Embling Hospital, Forensicare prison services, and Community Forensic Mental Health Service.

The sheer number of high-quality graduate recruits, larger than last year’s intake of 14, is a testament to the organisation’s growth and commitment to helping  our consumers and advancing our wider nursing workforce.

Unlike previous years, this year, two nurses from the program will experience a third accelerated rotation at the Royal Children’s Hospital mental health unit. This will give the two recruits a greater exposure to mental health care outside of a forensic setting. Likewise, two graduate nurses from the Royal Children’s Hospital will also spend a rotation working in Thomas Embling Hospital units.
